Global objective of the programme
Improved Quality Standards and production of higher Value Added leather Products
in order to increase Export capacity at enterprise level and Stimulate economic
growth and Development of African ACP countries..
Specific Objectives of the
Programme
Objective 1:
Increase of Company Competitiveness
Improved competitiveness of the tanning, footwear and leather goods sub-sectors
in terms of product development, product quality and marketing capabilities in
the export markets through training programs in selected African training and
technology centres and through specially designed and programmed interventions.
Objective 2:
Improvement of Quality of Raw Material
To assist and up-grade the raw-hide, raw-skins and semi-processed leather
quality in cooperation with ESALIA/CFC and the regional program in specific
areas. This includes preventive actions in expansion of the “EKEK” disease and
spreading information on improved hide-pulling methods for machine flayed hides
and preparing a “Classification system for wet-blue hides and skins” and getting
it accepted as a standard for ESALIA countries in cooperation with COTANCE.
Objective 3:
Investment Promotion and Upgrading
Upgrading of selected private sector SME’s and improving their performance
through better machinery and equipment, material quality, product development,
technology, quality control and marketing
Objective 4:
Capacity Building
Strengthening intermediary sectoral and sub-sectoral organizations of the region
including branch associations, training and technical institutions, bureau of
standards and similar outfits. The immediate
objective 2 is planned to be carried out also in close cooperation with the CFC
financed LLPI executed project entitled “Adding value to African leather through
improvement of quality of leather and leather products”. This project is
designed , among other things, to strengthen and improve the operations of the
training institutes working in four of the ESALIA countries namely: Ethiopia,
Kenya, Sudan and Zimbabwe. The diagnostic study is expected to be carried out by
the CDE associated consultants.
Objective 5:
Environnemental Issues
Improve the knowledge of the SME’s involved in the project on environment and
clean technology issues and on industrial safety, labor and gender matters.
