Objective 2:
Improvement of Quality of Raw Material
To assist and up-grade the raw-hide, raw-skins and semi-processed leather
quality in cooperation with ESALIA/CFC and the regional program in specific
areas. This includes preventive actions in expansion of the “EKEK” disease and
spreading information on improved hide-pulling methods for machine flayed hides
and preparing a “Classification system for wet-blue hides and skins” and getting
it accepted as a standard for ESALIA countries in cooperation with COTANCE.
Action 1
Preparation of a preventive program to address the expansion of the EKEK disease
in a selected pilot area and implementing the same. (Area to be selected is the
same area where the curative pilot project is to be implemented by the Ethiopian
Government) This preventive program is to be drafted in cooperation with the CDE
associated consultants, ESALIA and the Ethiopia Tanners Association.
Output 1
A practical program to address the EKEK disease problem and to stop its further
spreading. A pilot area is to be selected and the program development and
drafting is to be carried out jointly by the CDE associated consultants, ESALIA
and Ethiopian Tanners Association. The output is expected to be prepared in such
format - with in depth cost/benefit analysis - that it can be presented to the
international donor community and/or development banks for financial
consideration.
Action 2
Re-drafting the “Classification of Wet-blue Hides by Quality” with all the
comments and improvement suggestions received and drafting a similar
classification system for wet-blue
skins. Contact relevant institutions such as various national and international
tannery associations like COTANCE, FAO, UNIDO, CFC, ISO etc for presentation of
the system.
Preparing a concept for the implementation of the system to be financed from
suitable funding source.
Output 2
Completed wet-blue classification system for hides and skins accepted as
the standard for ESALIA countries wet-blue materials by the international
organizations concerned and the various ESALIA countries tanners and traders.
